A Non-Invasive Sleep Solution
Patients with sleep apnea and sleep disordered breathing can find an alternative approach to sleep therapy right here at St. Louis Smile Salon. We implement a treatment that is based on the same methodology used in airway supply in CPR, thanks to the TAP appliance.
How Does TAP Work?
Sleep disordered breathing typically occurs when the soft tissues in the back of the mouth and throat collapse against one another, preventing airflow into the lungs. The TAP appliance looks similar to a mouth guard, and places the jaws in a position that opens the airway in the back of the throat. Without the use of a CPAP machine or other device, the TAP uses a natural solution to open the airway and keep oxygen flowing when someone is resting. When someone wears the TAP appliance, their lower jaw is brought slightly forward, preventing the back of the tongue and soft palate from sealing themselves off against the pharynx.
As soon as we deliver a custom made TAP appliance to our patients, they can expect to see immediate results that very first night it is worn. Some people find that their results are so dramatic from oral sleep apnea devices that they can give up their CPAP machines completely.
